one: A synonym for ‘person’ in expressions like ‘my dear one’, ‘my own one’, though these now have rather an archaic sound to them. In standard collocations like ‘young one’, ‘old one’, ‘little one’, where ‘one’ is unstressed, it is usually written ‘un’ and is often attached to the preceding word.

‘My dear one’ is used by a man to his lover in The Sandcastle, by Iris Murdoch. ‘My own one’ occurs in a friendly, rather than an inti mate way, in The Limits of Love, by Frederic Raphael. In Gideon Planish, by Sinclair Lewis, a wife who constantly changes the vocatives that she uses to her husband includes ‘big one’ and ‘great one’ amongst them. ‘Little one’ appears in that form in George Eliot’s Scenes of Clerical Life, used by a man to his eighteen-year-old adopted daughter.
